Democracy
Many people had ideas about democracy. Those people include Aristotle, John Locke, Montesquieu, and Jean - Jacques Rousseau.
In a pure democracy, a problem or idea can be decided by all of the citizens. In a representative democracy, the type of democracy that America has, instead of everyone being involved in the decisions, the citizens elect and vote for people to represent them to make their opinions heard.
There are five concepts that the democracy America has is based on. They include the worth of the individual, equality of all people, majority rules and minority rights, an acceptance of the necessity of compromise, and insistence upon the widest possible degree of freedom. The worth of the individual is where each person is a separate being capable of making democratic decisions. Equality of all persons is where there has to be equal opportunity and equality before the law for everyone. Majority rules and minority rights is where when voting, the side that has the majority of votes wins, but the minority also has rights. An acceptance of the necessity of compromise is where there has to be an agreement that compromise is necessary for a government to function. Insistence upon the widest possible degree of freedom is where there needs to be the most freedom possible without anarchy.

Federal Government
There are three main types of governments. There is Unitary government, which is like England, where all of the power is held by one single person or small group. The second type is Confederate government, like the confederate states of America during the civil war. In a confederate government, independent states come together in an alliance. The last type of government is a federal government.
In a federal government, all of the powers that the government has are divided between central government and multiple smaller local governments.
